Another Journey

Hubby and I have always enjoyed our "journeys". We take off with no particular place in mind and usually end up on back roads taking pics. Our most recent journey included Deerfield Valley, Elkhorn Lake and then we discovered the Staunton Dam. These first four shots are from Deerfield Valley.

Next we stopped for some shots at Elkhorn Lake.

Then we stumbled upon Staunton dam. For most of my life I've lived in Augusta County and never heard of this dam much less have seen it!! The first shot is the first I saw of it.

I had to search the internet to find out what this dam was called. It was quite breathtaking!!

Quite a few other shots taken that day, but I'll save those for another day!!

From this:

followed this recipe:

1 1/4 cups water, boiled and cooled
1 1/4 cups white vinegar

1 tablespoon Kosher Salt
2 tablespoons dill seed
1/4 teaspoon of celery seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seed
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes ( I used half )
1 bay leaf
2 garlic cloves minced
3 - 6 cucumbers
Add salt and spices to each jar. Add cucumbers sliced, whole (ends trimmed) or spears, packing them in tightly. Add pickling liquid to cover the cucumbers. Fill jar to within 1/2 inch of the top. Put a lid and ring on the jar and shake for a few seconds to distribute the salt and spices evenly. Refrigerate for 7 days, shaking the jar for a few seconds every day. These will last for about 6 months.

I'm thinking of changing the name of this blog to "Adventures of a Member of the Over the Hill Gang."

Always loved to cook and try new recipes! Well, I married a sweetheart who grew up in the country on a small farm in the (mid) South. They ate what they grew and grew what they liked to eat. As many of you know, country people used to eat a lot of fried foods. I grew up in a small city, lived in a regular "neighborhood" with sidewalks and streetlights. Pretty much opposites!

For some reason, my mother never let me cook while I was small. She did see that I took HomeEc. (Do you youngsters know what that is?) Guess she figured they'd teach me what I ~~wanted~~ needed to know. Must not have paid much attention, because I don't remember a thing. Course that was about 50 years ago.

To make a long story longer...hubby taught me quite a bit about cooking "country" style. Mostly the way his mom had for years!! One of his favorites during summer is fried squash. I grew up eating it "steamed" (boiled actually) so didn't know how to fix it and had never had it that way. So for the last 27 summers I've fixed fried squash (yellow and zucchini) just the way he likes it; dipped in egg, then flour and salt and pepper. But mine has never been crunchy enough!

Tonight I decided to do it differently. I used PLANKO to which I had added plane breadcrumbs. Still fried it and he LOVED it. Score one for me!!

By the way, the photo has nothing to do with the post except I like the shot and it does go with the Over the Hill Gang!

The Great Race

Sound like the name of a movie? It is. But it's also a race sponsored by Coker Tire and Hemmings Motor News, a collector car marketplace magazine. And yesterday (June 13) some of the cars came through our small community.

If you know us well, you know that Mike and I love seeing the old cars. After several had passed, I grabbed the Canon and headed outside. These are some of the shots I captured.

It began June 11 at Coker Tire headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee and will end June 17 at Hemmings headquarters in Bennington, Vermont. You can follow it here on Hemmings blog.

The Chesapeake House Pound Cake

Having never done anything like this before, I decided to get brave and give it a whirl!

Gooseberry Patch is hosting a blog hop of your family's FAVORITE recipe. So, here goes!

Many years ago while John Dalton was Governor of Virginia, his wife, Eddy, published a cookbook. One of the recipes is The Chesapeake House Pound Cake which the Governor brought from Tangier Island, Virginia. My family LOVES this recipe!

3 sticks butter (not margarine)
3 cups sugar
6 eggs
2 Tblsp. lemon flavor (I omit this)
1 Tblsp. vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp. baking power
1/4 tsp. mace (Mrs. Dalton's addition and I use it as well)

Cream butter and sugar until very light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating well after the addition of each egg at high speed on the electric mixer.
Sift together flower and baking power and add alternately with the milk and flavorings. Bake for approximately 1 hour at 350 degrees. Be sure to test cake for doneness before removing from the oven but DO NOT OVERCOOK! (I add the mace and sift with the flower and baking powder.)

Always Have Your Camera Handy

Yesterday we went by our local pharmacy and Colleen told me to "take a look." When I turned around I was surprised to see a fellow on horseback with three more horses in tow. Now this part of the Shenandoah Valley is an agricultural area and there are many farms and horse enthusiasts. But we don't often see someone riding through that small town riding a horse.

I grabbed my camera and indicated I'd like to take his picture. He rode over and upon questioning informed me of his purpose. Chris is riding from Dallas, TX (a real cowboy) to NYC. These are the photos I shot and you can follow him on Facebook. Or follow his progress here or donate here.

Colleen's Baby Shower

A few of you know that our youngest daughter (Colleen) is having a baby girl due July 3...less than a month! Her name will be Jade Willow. This past Saturday, her sister Rachel, hosted a baby shower and I wanted to share some of the pics. Rachel went above and beyond as far as I'm concerned. Almost everything was hand made or made from scratch. She did a wonderful job and is so excited about becoming an aunt.
Rachel sent me the recipe for these mini fruit pizzas and they were a hit!

My great niece (not only is she GREAT, she is my nephew's daughter) was unable to attend but made and brought this diaper cake (including all the cute hats and hair bows attached) She's so talented. I think she and Rachel must have the same genes!!

All the yummy food!!! HMMMMMM. Rachel's mother-in-law, Jayne Frend, made chicken salad croissants!

Obviously the gift table.

The theme of the shower was Ready to Hatch. We looked everywhere for a decorative bird cage and finally found one! Before leaving every one added a card of advice.

Ooooohing and awwwwing over all the gifts.

Now to await the event!!

Layers, Textures, Backgrounds, Etc.

Photography, like everything else, goes through phases, or so it seems to me. But no matter what type of "look" I'm trying to achieve, on of my favorite projects is matching my photos with all the free resources available.

One such source is kim klassen cafe. In this shot, I used two of her free textures; first was stained linen at about 50% and the second was pourvous.

Memorial Day Weekend

Our family got together the Sunday prior to the holiday and we all had a great day. Mike had cleaned and filled the kids pool early so the water wasn't too cold. Arriving full of excitement and squeals of delight they quickly donned bathing suits, were slathered with sun screen and headed out to the pool. Rachel, Colleen and I were all snapping pics all throughout the day. These are some of the shots from fun in the pool.

After refueling with hot dogs, hamburgers, corn-on-the-cob, baked beans, potatoes-squash-onions packets, and strawberry shortcake, there was a wild and crazy water balloon fight!!

Then cooling down with slices of watermelon.

This morning I received this shot taken on the ride home.

And a good time was had by all!! zzz

Some days it's difficult being a Christian

We live in Virginia and although blessed by the fact we suffered no tornado loss. However, the winds were quite hardy! When we moved into this house 16 years ago, there were three flowering cherry trees between the house and driveway. Every Spring the gorgeous pink blossoms fall to the ground and create what our 4-year-old grand daughter calls pink snow. After the storms moved through last night, this was the result.

Yes, there are a bunch of petals to clean up, but it's really disheartening when you overhear your neighbor say that it looks "trashy."

Yesterday we were treated to a wonderful afternoon! Rachel, Nick and the grand blessings came by and fixed us dinner. They had prepared a pork shoulder and fixed pulled bbq which was accompanied by potato salad, baked beans, cold slaw, and collard greens. It was out of this world.

Kelsey was in her element...picking flowers and Nathan just didn't know what to get into. He was chasing after Kelsey, picking flowers and throwing them down, swinging, sliding, chasing after his dad and grandpa and loving every minute of it.

I'm so thankful for all these precious moments and memories!

Here it is almost another year since my last post! So much inconsistency. I decided to give this another try since our oldest daughter, Rachel, has started blogging. Can't let her get ahead of me! LOL

I still love photography and am still learning my new camera. Have gotten a Canon PowerShot SX20 and love it. Am also learning Photoshop and CS5. You're never too old to learn new things...now if I can just remember them!

These are the newest shots of Kelsey and Nathan. They grow so fast...much faster than our girls did!

And another announcement...our youngest daughter, Colleen, is expecting Jade Willow on July 3! Can't wait to meet her.

What's This??

Well, it's been nine months since my last post. So what's this??
A new post! I'm just wondering if I can still do this.

Once again, life has drastically changed! Hubby and I have custody of our three year old grand daughter. Without going into details, lets just say it's only temporary. She has been with us since around the first of April and the matter will be reviewed again in September.
Talk about an adjustment!!! Being 60 years older than she, I find it very hard to "keep up." Our youngest daughter (who is still living with us) has been a big help and hubby is her favorite playmate! He is better able to "roughhouse" with her! She is very imaginative, loves to dress up, loves to help cook and loves to cuddle! I don't have a problem doing these!!

My activity on Flickr has dropped considerably although I still love taking photos. My problem is I seldom am able to post subjects other than flowers. I get an occasional sunset or cloud shot, but not doing any traveling, I assume (uh oh) people get tired of seeing the same flowers year after year!! LIFE

I’ve begun using Windows Live Writer and thought perhaps I may start blogging again!! Are you shocked? I am! LOL

Over the years I’ve realized that my life goes in phases. Everybody else probably already knows that, but I’m a slow learner! One thing that has remained a favorite phase throughout most of my life has been photography. Sometimes more intense than other times. The most intense period being when I got my first digital camera.

I took pictures of everything; some days taking over 200 pictures in a day. Photographing the same thing over and over trying to get the “perfect” shot or angle. I discovered Photobucket and then Flickr. I’m sure most of you are familiar with both photo storing websites.

Once the Flickr account was activated, people began commenting on my photos. Being naive, I was so shocked. The friend who introduced me to Flickr never told me about all the groups or Explore or all the potential friends you could make using Flickr. She uses it mostly for storing photos and sharing with family members. One thing led to another and after almost three years of activity, I was administering or co-administering 40+ groups. Then I was overwhelmed.

Commenting on other photographer’s work got to be a chore and was more like work than fun. I stepped back, left most groups and turned responsibilities over to friends I had made over the years. I am still in contact with some of them and one even calls me occasionally from Portugal.

My latest interest is Facebook. WHEW! Another adventure takes off. Again meeting people with similar interests from all over the world. Many of my good Flickr friends are also my friends on Facebook.

In May I turned 62. When I look back at the advances in technology (some good and some not), I am amazed to see what as transpired over the last 40 or 50 years. When computers first came out, they were enormous, mainly used by large corporations and would take up a whole room. Now just look … laptops, digital cameras, cell phones, etc., etc.

But with all the changes in our world and in our individual lives, there is one thing that remains the same…GOD. He never changes and His love endures throughout eternity.

Ahhhh, being a grandparent is GREAT!!!!

Well since I've only published three or four times in the last year, it's time for another update!!!

We became grandparents again on New Year's Eve. Our precious grandson was born at 9:57 p.m. and weighed in at 8 lbs. 5 ozs. and was 21 inches long. He had his first doctor's visit today and although I have not talked to our daughter, I'm sure he's growing like a weed!!! She said he eats well and lots!! :-)

His initials are NIP and so, for the time being, we call him Nipper! I'm sure that won't last but it works for now. He's his proud grandpa holding the sweetheart. And Kelsey thinks he's the best thing to come along since the Backyardagains!! She's two now, by the way!!

He was the last baby born in the old year at our local hospital. As with many hospitals, there is a big to-do about the first baby born of the New Year. This year, H & R Block honored the last one born in the old year so Mom and Dad got a great gift basket!!!

Hi out there in blogville!!!! I know, it's been months since I posted and I really don't expect anyone to comment, but I wanted to bring you up to date!!!

Hubby and I celebrated our 25th Anniversary in May!!! I won't lie and say it's been a perfect marriage, we've had our ups and downs, but by the grace of God, we love each other more today than back then!!! Our daughters are 24 and 22 and our grand daughter is 20 months old and she is "Grandpa's Girl"!!! She's going to have a baby brother in December ~ 8 days (maybe) after her birthday!!! Needless to say, her Dad and Grandpa are both thrilled, maybe even more than Mom and Grandma!!!

I'm still very involved in photography and if you'd like you can view some of my work on Flickr. For me, it's been more addictive than blogging!! :-) I want to share one of my fave photos of our little girl. Isn't she adorable?? I think so. Those eyes really are that blue!!! I take care of her several days a week when Mom is working and Dad is sleeping (he works third shift).

One of my favorite things to photograph is flowers. If you lived next door to us, you may see me in your yard!!! Most of our neighbors are used to seeing me snapping shots of their flowers. Another favorite subject is sunsets and sunrises. It seems this summer we've had some phenomenal skies here in our Valley! Each a different painting by the MASTER!!!!

Hope all of you are well and, as time permits, I may just get active in this community once again!

Touring Staunton, Virginia~Part I

Recently Hubby and I decided to spend a day taking pictures. We went all over the county and into Staunton as well. Yes, that's how it is spelled and it is pronounced Stanton.

Two years ago a "new" hotel opened. The Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center. Actually the hotel first opened in 1924 but had eventually closed and become quite run down. It had a multi-million dollar face lift and has become quite the place to be seen in the area. Although you won't see us there unless we go in to take pictures. So, here it is in all it's grandeur!!

On the inside you are greeted by such much elegance and grace!

But who knows for how long! Hi everyone~I've missed you all! Yea, I know, if I've missed you, why haven't I been around? Well, I've become a Flickr-holic! Yes, I'm addicted to Flickr and I admit it. Back when my good friend and neighbor, Lazy Daisy got me started in blogging, which led to a digital camera, which led to Flickr, WHO KNEW!!!! I even have my own group.

In case you didn't know, Flickr is a whole community. Yes, people commenting on other people's photos, Flickr-mailing, and even meeting...just like bloggers. Of course, many of you already know that. In fact, a fellow Flickr-ite and his family are coming by our home tomorrow and it will be their second visit!

Lazy Daisy asked me to do a couple of things to her template (I'm surprised I remembered how) and I decided that since I still have my blog, I may as well see what's going on in Blogville. So here I am.

Life has been busy over the holidays. Our beautiful granddaughter turned one on Dec. 22 and we had a party-of course. Her mom made cupcakes instead of a cake and she had it everywhere. Then on Christmas Eve they came to our house for dinner. Our daughters made peanut butter balls while Dad watched baby and Grammy and Grandpa watched a movie (hee hee)! Then Christmas Day we went to their house for breakfast and on to Great Granny's with all of my hubby's family! WHEW what a day. Hubby has six brothers and sisters, all have children and all but one was there. It was good to see everyone even though most live nearby.

I hope each of you had a very special Christmas and are looking forward to a blessed New Year.

DUMB QUESTION!

And now you say, there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers. Maybe it's not exactly a dumb question, but it is a question nonetheless!

Do you ever get the "silly giggles"? That's what I call it. Maybe you call it something else or maybe you don't have the slightest idea of what I'm talking about. To me the silly giggles is when you get tickled about something and start laughing and laughing and laughing and laughing, well you get the idea ~ you can't stop! It happened to me last night but I won't go into details here. I got tickled about something that happened to our beautiful Boo (that's what I call our granddaughter) and I could not stop laughing. I had to go to our bedroom because I was getting embarrassed! Our daughter was in class but our son-in-law was here.

I must have laughed for 20 minutes, I could not stop! I laughed so hard tears were rolling down my checks, my ribs hurt, my stomach hurt and my lungs hurt. It was painful! After I went to bed I thought of it again and started to giggle again~even now as I type this, I'm smiling. Today is Melli's 50th Birthday!!!!!

And I'm in charge of the cake!!!! It has not been an easy task either! I mean, after all, am I supposed to have one for the "dragon slayer" "ax murderer" or the lady who LOVES hats???? If you've met Melli, you know what I'm talking about but if you haven't, I'm really sorry because Melli is such a joy to be around. And believe me, you NEVER know what to expect!!!!!!

We've had some HOT weather here with no real signs of relief! If it just wasn't so humid to boot, it would be so much easier to endure.

We had our sweet grand daughter spend the night with us Saturday night for the first time since they moved out. It was intended to give her Mom and Dad a date night but they were both so sick with colds or allergies that they ended up staying home and going to bed early ~ which may have been a good thing.

Kelsey is growing and changing so quickly! She's already 7.5 months old. We have a walker here for her and she loves being in it. She chases our dog all around the first floor giggling the whole time. It's a real sight.

I hope you don't get tired of looking at her, but I just have to share another picture of her.

She really is the Sunshine of My Life. Every time I rock her, I sing that old song You Are My Sunshine! What's funny about that is that I did NOT know her parents had gotten her a little bunny that sings that song!!

Fears ~ What Are Yours?

My friend, neighbor, fellow blogger, and instigator (just kidding), Lazy Daisy, and I are doing a Women of Faith Bible Study entitled Living Above Worry and Stress. It's a great study but honestly, I'm 60 now and things don't stress me as much as they used to. Of course, our children are grown and I no longer work out of the home so life has much less stress.

Today's lesson was about fear and trembling. Noting that as children many of us feared the dark and had to sleep with a favorite stuffed animal or "blankie" but as adults our fears are realities. Do you fear rejection, an unfaithful mate, loosing your job, children being involved with the "wrong" people, divorce, bad men (thieves, kidnappers, murderers, rapists or terrorists)? Are you afraid of loneliness, growing old, saying the wrong thing, are you still afraid of the dark?

I never had a special stuffed animal or blanket that I needed to sleep with as a child but I did (and still do to an extent) have a fear of falling. (Forgot about this one Daisy.) I'm not afraid of the dark, I just like to see where I'm going so I don't fall. My mother used to fall from time to time and when she was older, broke a hip by falling.

But why are we afraid? I have reached a point in my life where there are not many things that I do fear. I don't certainly don't live in fear. After all, if someone steals from me, is it something that they needed more than me; if they had asked, I probably would have given it freely.

I'm not afraid of getting older ~ I'm just that much closer to being with my Lord! I don't want to loose my memory and no longer be able to recognize loved ones and friends. But even if that does happen, God is in control!

In Mark 5:36, Jesus said, "Do not be afraid ~ only believe." And in Matthew 10:31, He offers a very good reason, "You are more valuable than many sparrows."

As I sit at my computer working on my pictures or blogging, I can see many birds at our feeders. In particular, yesterday I watched an adult MALE Cardinal feed another Cardinal. It was the same size as the adult but not the brilliant red as the adult male~it was either a female or an adolescent. If God provides for that little bird in that way, why would he not provide all my needs. If all my needs are met, what reason do I have to fear?

In closing, I share a quote from Lucy Swindoll:

There resides in the heart of every believer little pockets of fear. For some of us it's cowardice. For others, it's timidity. Although we know the Savior gives courage and power, sometimes we feel safer in our little pocket than in His big provision. So we cower inside, afraid to be bold. We permit our human frailty to stand in the way of His strength.

Do you have any fears? Remember Psalm 56:3: Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in YOU.

Monday Memories

Haven't done one of these is a long time. After reading Lazy Daisy's memory, it reminded me of a time when I was in grade school. I went to a "private" school for the first six years of my education (including Kindergarten).

Every year the students would put on several plays. Most of the time I was an "extra"~ you know, the people that just stood around and didn't have any speaking parts. I wish I could remember my age at the time; probably seven or eight, and I was asked to be Gretel in Hansel and Gretel!!! WHOA! Me...get up in front of people...adults...and speak???? Oh no! Well, I didn't have a choice, I couldn't say no.

I remember my costume was brown and a matching brown hat that tied under my chin. I learned my lines (we were used to memorizing because we memorized scripture) so that wasn't hard. I remember the boy that played Hansel was a boy I didn't like much.

I don't remember much about acting but the one memory that REALLY sticks out in my mind was at the end of the play. We had finished and all the parents stood up and were applauding their "stars." I was in such a hurry to get off the stage, that I tripped!!! HOW EMBARRASSING! People started laughing and all I wanted to do was crawl in a hole. Of course Mom and Dad told me what a wonderful job I had done and maybe I had, but I really don't remember THAT part.

I've changed a lot since then and don't mind getting up in front of people but I don't think I will ever forget that...maybe just push it back in my memory.

Yesterday I got a letter, yes snail mail, from my Aunt who lives in New York saying that she hadn't seen any recent posts on my blog so I guess I'd better do some posting so she can keep up with us. I also got an email from one of my friends saying she missed reading my blog...although I don't know why.

Last month my GREAT niece got married and they had a lovely outdoor wedding. I took lots of pics, but the sun was really bright that day, so they weren't the best. But, you know this PROUD grammy, I just have to post this shot of Kelsey which I took at that wedding!

She looks like this most of the time. She really is a happy baby. Her mom was the same way! She just on the verge of crawling, but to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if she walked first! Of course, I happen to think she's the brightest 7 month old there is.

Just to brag on myself a little...I got an email from an online group asking if they could use one of my photos (that's on Flickr) in an article they had prepared on the Ford Motor Company. Well, I nearly fell over!!! Most of my shots are of flowers, so this was really a shocker! What makes it even stranger is that it was Hubby's idea, and I took it at an antique car, truck and tractor show last weekend. It's the emblem on the front of an old Ford tractor.

Oh yea, one more thing...I'm going to be featured as the Artist of the Week in one of the groups on Flickr. I don't think it's because I'm that good, I think it's because the person that asked me is a contact of mine and lives in a nearby city. Oh well, it's fun! I wanted to share with you a fantastic FREE photo enhancing program I found and downloaded. I know, there is Paint Shop Pro and Photo Shop but they cost a LOT of money and since I'm a "woman of leisure" I can't buy those. The one I downloaded is called Photo Filtre and it's wonderful. It does so many things. Today I took a photo that was not very clear and turned it into this:

Grandparenting 101

Saturday Granpa decided it would be fun to take Kelsey to the pet store. We had taken our step granddaughter several months ago and she really enjoyed it. Kelsey is a bit younger, but she was full of smiles!!!

Being a grandparent is like nothing else in the world!!!! You can't begin to describe it to anyone and only another grandparent can understand. Rachel has a baby handbook and I was reading the section about grandparents. It says: "Having a grandchild is one of the great joys of life, and the child who has grandparents to dote on him is blessed indeed." I'm not sure she feels blessed but I know we are!!! And if doting is that good, we won!

Her eyes are wide as she takes in her surroundings!!! It's as if she wants to see it all right now. She has, what I consider, amazing ability to concentrate and she's not even six months old. She will hold anything you give her and seemingly study it for a long time, turning it around and looking intently at it.

We are looking in on our friends' cats while they are away and yesterday we took Kelsey with us. When she saw JJ (the friendly one), she broke out in a huge grin and giggled almost the entire time we were there. She reacts the same with our dog, Naomi.

For me, being a grandparent is the reward for having children.

Thankful Thursday

Good morning everyone. I have so many things to be thankful for that I hardly know where to begin.

I'm thankful for everything that God has provided and all the gifts he has given me. I'm especially excited about my new hobby of photography.

I'm thankful that I don't have to work out of the home.

I'm thankful that I had an empty nest for about a month (see post below) but I'm also happy that our youngest is back home. She may not be in the house all the time, but she's at home.

I'm thankful our oldest and her husband have found a place to rent and all their "stuff" is gone. Although I miss our dear, sweet grand-daughter being here, I'm able to take care of her several days a week. She just keeps getting cuter!!!

I'm thankful for my sister-in-the-Lord (also my sister-in-law) that brings so much joy to my life.

I'm thankful for all my blogging friends and "sisters" who responded to my post yesterday saying they had missed me.

I'm thankful for the beautiful weather we've had this week~almost like Fall. The morning's a cool and the days are NOT humid~which is a big problem for me.

For those of you wondering...one maybe two of you...the quiet is MOSTLY still here. This past Saturday we went to Atlanta and picked up Colleen and drove back on Sunday! Whew, what a trip! Not one I want to make again~in more ways than one.

I've been spending most of my time on my hobby~photography. It seems my speciality is turning toward flowers although I like taking all types. This is a picture I took of one of my neighbor's roses. I've taken so many in our gardens, that I had to start taking pictures of her flowers (with permission, of course). I'm thoroughly enjoying this outlet and it gets me outside so much more than just blogging.

What's New?

Nothing really. Except the quiet!!! I haven't "heard" quiet for about 23 years~actually longer. When I was single, it seems I had to have some noise on~whether the TV or radio~there was always some sort of noise in my adult life.

Now that I'm by myself most of the time, I've learned to appreciate the quiet. I can hear the rain and the birds sing. And, I believe, I can hear God's voice more easily. He has truly blessed me all my life but I am so thankful to be where I am now.

Most of you know that I love photography (understatement) and we have bird feeders strategically placed around the house. I say strategically but when originally placed, we didn't know it would be strategic. As I sit here at the computer, I can see two feeders very clearly. I can also see another one from our bedroom and bathroom. Now, talk about something funny...no, we won't go there, but you get the idea. I can see two goldfinches in my neighbor's driveway and it's always such a treat to see them. (Note to self: get finch food.)

Now that I think about it, a lot has changed. Since we are empty nesters, we've noticed a BIG difference in our electric bill (WHEW) and our grocery bill. Yes, they helped financially, but in all honesty, it wasn't enough. The amount of salt necessary for the water softener has gone down considerably. I wash dishes by hand rathern than use the dishwasher; there are fewer showers (two people rather than five); and, this is a biggie too, I don't have to share the computer with anybody!!!!

Another difference is when we eat. Now that there are more daylight hours, Hubby likes to work in the yard when he gets home or work on one of his projects and not necessarily eat right away. When everyone was here, I always had to have dinner ready between 5:30 and 6:00 because our SIL had to leave to be at work by 7:00 p.m. Sometimes #1 daughter was working at dinner time and #2 daughter was out with friends so it was a challenge as to how much to prepare. Of course, leftovers always went to work.

I'm a simple person and I am loving my simple life right now. I keep our granddaughter several days a week (when Mom and Dad are both working~or he has to sleep during the day) but she's certainly no problem. She'll be five months old May 22.

Madeleine McCann was kidnapped while in Portugal, but authorities believe she may possibly have been taken to Spain. If any one sees a child who looks at all like Madeleine, look into her eyes. She has a distinctive black streak in her right eye that runs from the pupil through her blue-green eyes. PLEASE HELP FIND MADELEINE!

WHEW! Sometimes I could just kick myself. I had this post almost finished and accidentally closed the browser and lost it all!! So, here goes again.

Thankful Thursday ~ New Venture

I'm thankful that I can start a new venture~a new blog. I'm thankful God is working in my life in many areas and one of those is more of Him and less of me! I want to share His dealings with me. I've done that here but there has also been a lot of "stuff." Don't get me wrong, I'm not condeming "stuff." I just want the new place to focus on Him.

Several months ago in the meme, Why I Blog, I said:

The first and foremost reason is to share my faith. If God would lead someone here, I'd want that person to know what He has done in my life. As has been said, I'm not perfect, just forgiven. I have day-to-day struggles . . . just like everyone else and God doesn't always deliver me out of my struggles but helps me through them.

I'm not sure if this is God's will right now, but if it is, He will bless others and use my humble offering to Him.

Knew it was...

too good to be true. Rachel, Nick and Kelsey moved to their new home (only about 20 minutes away) over the weekend and I'm soooooooo enjoying the peace and quiet! I'm getting my house back to the way I want it~no extra furniture or baby toys to trip over. Perfect time to clean house...so to speak.

We've heard from Colleen a couple of times and she's doing fine although she has started sounding homesick~been calling me Mommy. She called this morning at 6:30 a.m. and said she's going to give it another week but she's pretty sure she wants to come home. The way she sounded though, I don't think she'll make it a week.

As much as I love my children and would do anything for them, I've been looking forward to the empty nest for about seven years. Hubby and I only knew each other 7 months before we married so we've been looking forward to this time alone and (forgive me if I'm being too honest for you) I'm a bit disappointed.

But God has other things in mind and He will once again comfort and aid me in yet another adjustment.

I've enjoyed my blogging break and probably won't post as often as I used to but will be back from time to time. If you have a minute, please check out My Photo Blog and see what I've been up to.

The Blame Game

It was the school's fault, it was the parent's fault, it was all those violent games or movies or TV shows. It was the NRA's fault, it was the gun manufacturer's fault, it was the gun dealer's fault, it's because they took prayer out of the schools, and on and on ad nausium!

What has prompted this post was a recent letter to the editor in our local newspaper in which a mother was blaming the parents of the VA TECH shooter for those tragic events. The shooter was 23 years old, knew right from wrong and chose wrong! Yes, all those things may have played a major role in his life (TV, video games, etc.) but the choice to pull the trigger (33 times) was his own. Just as smokers choose to light up a cigarette despite health warnings.

The problem with society today, is trying to blame someone or something for our mistakes. God created each one of us with a free will. Free to choose right or wrong. There are hundreds of volumes of books with local, state and federal laws telling us what is wrong behavior and the consequences that will occur for a wrong choice.

God said the same thing in ten short commandments! And God also said "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Rom. 6:23 Let me be clear on this, Wikipedia defines wage as "a compensation which workers receive in exchange for their labor." The payment for sin is death! "...but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

You can blame whomever you choose for those events in Virginia, or at Columbine High School or the tragedy of 9/11 or any other such horrific act if you want, but the truth of the matter is the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of Satan. Whether we like it or not, believe it or not, that is the truth. And if you don't believe it, you've made him very happy and he will leave you alone because you already belong in his camp.

The only thing that will change this world today is a changed heart. The only way to change a heart is to be "born again."

Until people have changed hearts, you will continue to see these tragedies. You will not have peace in the Middle East that will last. And, it is going to continue to get worse~it will not get better until the end. Have things EVER gotten better??????

For true followers of Christ, I'll tell you what I saw on a hat this past weekend and something I firmly believe in, "RELAX, God is in control." By the way, that applies too to all those worried about global warming!

I realize I may cause some people to squirm and probably will loose some readers, but I believe in telling the truth as revealed by God!

Thankful Thursday

There are so many things to be a thankful for and several of them are in my post yesterday.

Most of all, I think I'm thankful that God is in control. No matter how hard I try to make things the way I want them, He always gently reminds me that He is in control. I must be thankful that He carries the load and I don't have to.

I'm also thankful for the online Bible Study "I Am...so you don't have to be" that The Preachers Wife is leading. I had to chuckle because not too long ago an unsaved person asked, "As much as you study the Bible, don't you know it by now?" Obviously that person doesn't know the depth of God's word.

I'm thankful for the Christian blogging community and all the opportunities we have to share, encourage and pray for each other.

God is truly awesome! Sometimes He answers prayers right away and sometimes, we need to wait. Waiting is good.

Blessing #1: We heard from Colleen yesterday evening and she is fine. She doesn't have a job yet but is going to be looking for one today.

Blessing #2: A friend and I have been praying about a situation at her work and yesterday the Lord started moving!

Blessing #3: Rachel and Nick found a house to rent nearby and will be able to move in May 1.

Blessing #4: Rachel fixed us the most awesome dinner yesterday as a way of saying thank you.
The main course was something we had never had before~Asparagus Steak Oscar! Hubby and I are "plain" people and don't eat fancy meals as a rule, but this was DELICIOUS! We also had twice baked potatoes and a gorgeous salad. I took some pics just so you could see the results.

She also made Cream Puffs (from scratch, no less) for dessert! Yes, there are a couple missing because I was slow again taking the pics.

Blessing #5: Our granddaughter will be four months old on Sunday. She growing rapidly and is extremely curious of her surroundings. Her favorite thing is her jumper. She's very precious to us and we will miss having her around once they have moved. Here's a current picture.

A Call to Prayer

As I am sure you are aware, we in Virginia suffered a terrible tragedy. Yesterday, over 30 people were killed by the hand of an individual who was influenced by evil forces.

Please pray for the families who have suffered loss, for the wounded, for friends, for the administration and faculty of VA Tech.

In my devotion this morning (Every Day Light), Selwyn Hughes encourages Christians to "apply the principle of looking for good in everything bad." On the surface that is difficult to do in this situation but I am sure God has a plan. Pray that God will use this tragedy for His purposes, whatever they might be.

Thorns

Yes, it's after Easter and I would have posted this prior to Easter, but I am just now able to do so.

Have you ever wondered about the thorns on the crown of thorns? I have. I've only been able to connect thorns with the ones on my rose bushes. Although I've seen pictures, I've never seen thorns the size depicted in this painting by ElGreco

In addition to the scourging Jesus received he had a crown of thorns placed on His head and I don't imagine it was "placed" there gently. With the anger and mockery that was felt by most people there, it was probably driven into his forehead.

Saturday my curiosity was satisfied. While out and about, Hubby and I visited a neighborhood park (just a very small one) and while walking along the newly refurbished walkway, I notice a tree beside the fence...one among many. This one was different. It had thorns on it.

Although this is just the trunk of the tree all the branches had these same thorns and even larger ones. Imagine the pain thorns of this size could cause. And He did it for YOU.

Having your children leave the nest that is. But it hasn't been easy. Colleen left Friday evening about 5:00 p.m. and arrived in Georgia about 12:30 a.m.

Saturday morning Hubby and I went to a couple of yard sales and I was looking at things I thought Colleen would like to have...and then remembered! Later, we went to the grocery store and the same thing happened. I see something that she liked and as I reached for it, remembered she wasn't there any more. This time, tears filled my eyes.

Last night I cried again. Today at church as I asked for prayer for her salvation, I cried once more. But after all the prayers from my family, friends, and blogging friends, the Lord has given me a peace ~ His peace, which passes understanding. She is in His capable hands.

Thank you all again. Do I dare pray that God would move out our other daughter and her husband? Yes.

On Monday, I posted a prayer request for our daughter. The responses I received have totally overwhelmed me. There were responses from bloggers I have followed for a long time for which I am extremely thankful. But the overwhelming part was the responses from people I never heard from before. Brothers and sisters in Christ offering prayer support, encouragement and even information on the area she will be moving to.

To each of you, I say Thank You. I have been truly humbled. Father in Heaven, I give You thanks for leading each of those individuals to my home here on the internet and rededicate Colleen into your care. Thank you Father, that you hear and answer the prayers of your children and will answer them in your way and in your time.

Please pray for our youngest daughter, Colleen. She has told us that she plans to move to Kennesaw, GA with a friend (one we don't know) and will be leaving Friday. Many of you know that she has struggled with learning and although she is 20, she is a very immature 20.

She knows what we believe but, to my knowledge, has never accepted Christ Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior.

Please pray for her salvation. And if God could use this experience to draw her to Him, then so be it.

I'm thankful today. Yea, I'm thankful all the time, but today, I found something! And I'm so excited. I get just like a little kid sometimes! I have a couple of free photo enhancing programs on my computer and I'm always exploring them to see what I can do with my pictures.

Some time back I had to get a new DVD drive and along with it, came the photo enhancing program Roxio. I used it some, but mostly used Kodak, Shutterfly or something online. Today, I ran across the extra CD that came with the Roxio program and guess what I can do... I CAN CREATE DIGITAL SCRAPBOOK PAGES!!!! Check out my first attempt.

What is your response to our King?

Yesterday, we had the privilege of listening to Daniel Anderson, President of Appalachian Bible College (ABC) which is located in Bradley, West Virginia (near Beckley).

He spoke from Luke 19:28-40, The Triumphal Entry. From this section he told us of the four responses to a King. I had never heard this teaching before and found it quite interesting.
First response: Selfish. vs. 37 refers to the "whole multitude of disciples." This multitude could include nonbelievers as well as believers. They were rejoicing and praising God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen (emphasis mine). Anyone can offer praise from mighty works they see, but it take a follower of Christ to offer praises for the unseen.
Second response: Scoffers. vs. 39 said the Pharisees called Him "Teacher." How could they call him teacher if they wouldn't let Him teach them?
Third response: Superficial. For this you have to read Pilot's response to the priests when they shouted that they wanted Jesus crucified. He couldn't understand why because he found no wrong in Him. Very probably his only reason for this was to please the Jewish people. Trying to please everyone.
Fourth response: Sincere. vs. 40 says that "if 'these' should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out." The "these" are the sincere followers of Christ~the ones that share His love and His message.
I know that in my walk I've probably been all of these but I pray that as I mature in my walk, God would find me to be sincere.

I'm so very thankful for my Hubby. In May we will have been married 24 years. God brought us together and has kept us together.

Most of you know that last year my dear Hubby gave me a digital camera (my first). I've always loved taking pictures but many times never got the 35 mm film developed. What inspires my picture taking the most is God's awesome creations.
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Rom. 1:20 (NIV)
My precious Hubby loves to take rides and I always make sure I have my camera when we leave. He's so good to me that as we ride and I see something I want to take a picture of, all I have to do is say stop and he does...cautiously, of course. Me, I just slam on the breaks!!!

Both my Hubby and my brother tell me I have an "eye" for pictures. I tell them, it isn't me, it's what God allows me to see.

And, I'm thankful that I have to begin getting ready for the Beth Moore Daniel Bible Study that I'm going to this morning. We've only got this week and next week and it will end.

I am so thankful for my salvation. As we approach Easter, the world becomes more aware of Christ's death on the cross. Something believers think about almost daily.
I am thankful for God's promise: " Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." Acts 16:31
I'm thankful for God's Words to us. That we can daily read His instructions and know how He wants us to live our lives. That we can study and memorize it and keep it in our hearts.

I'm thankful for our church family. They love us with the love of Christ and are truly concerned for us. They pray with us and for us.
I'm thankful for Iris at Sting My Heart and the many other believers that leave comments of encouragement.

A Smile!

One Merriam-Webster definition of smile is "to bestow approval." Wikipedia has this to say: "a smile is a facial expression formed by flexing the muscles most notably near both ends of the mouth. The smile can be also around the eyes." This is an ultrasound of a baby still in the womb. See the smile?

What are some things that make me smile? I smile when I see my Hubby. We will be celebrating our 24th anniversary in May. It hasn't always been smiles, there have also been tears, but God brought us together, and that too, makes me smile.

I've been smiling a lot lately. The reason is our precious granddaughter! When I see her, I'm overwhelmed with love and admiration for one of God's creations. She will be three months old on Thursday ~ it hardly seems possible.

I smile when I see sunrises, sunsets, mountains, lakes, oceans, birds, lambs, flowers, and many other of God's creations. I smile when I see family, friends and strangers~yes strangers. You never know if that smile reflects God's love for someone.

And, I smile when God enables me to help someone in some way. He has given me many gifts and if they can be used for His glory, I smile!

In the end, I guess what makes me smile is God. What makes you smile?

Several people have asked me about using Opera as a browser. For a long time I've used Firefox and been very happy with it. Then it seemed like everything fell apart! Every time one of us would use it, it would just freeze up in the middle of something and you couldn't do anything. You'd have to close it down and start all over again. Then sometimes when you closed it down, you couldn't get it started again because it said the program was already running...but it wasn't.

So, I'm using Opera and it does not freeze up. There are several things I'm not able to do, but there seem to be fixes for those. My biggest complaint is that when I've tried tried to put an image in a post, i.e., Wordless Wednesday, the image will not shrink so I have an image the size of the original OR none at all. Since I post a lot of pictures (!) I just may have to keep using Firefox to keep doing my blogging.

I've also been experimenting with the free version of WordPress. I really like it too but it also has some drawbacks. The biggest one being that I cannot put Bible Gateway in my sidebar! Something to do with it being . I guess I expect perfection from all these modern conveniences, but it doesn't happen.

After all, I'm not perfect, why should I expect something man-made to be perfect???

Something new. I'm using Opera web browser! We've been having problems with Firefox. It seems to take forever to get started and once it does, it freezes up frequently. This has been a BIG disappointment to me. Yes, I have the latest version so I don't know what the problem is.
